SDG 16

Protection of fundamental freedoms

Fundamental freedoms can be understood in terms of basic political and civil rights, such as freedom of expression and association, freedom of the press, access to information and participation, and freedom from discrimination. An enabling environment conducive to controlling corruption requires sustainable good governance, which is among other factors, reliant on fundamental freedoms. Respect for fundamental freedoms leads to an informed and open public sphere, and a free citizenry is a powerful counterweight to corrupt activities.
